Dang, Ne-Yo sure doesn’t hold back. He gives it to you straight, no chaser.
Pop star Lady Gaga has managed to sell over 23 million albums and
over 64 million singles worldwide since she first hit the scene in 2008,
but even with those achievements, Ne-Yo still doesn’t think she’ll ever
reach icon status. The newly appointed Senior Vice President of A&R at Motown, recently was asked what artist that he felt would stand the test of time during an interview with UK’s Daily Star, and he flat out revealed he that he didn’t believe it would be Gaga.
Everybody thought it was going to be Lady GaGa, but where is she right now, what’s going on with her? ”Not to take anything away from her because she’s ridiculously talented, but artists who stand the test of time – you just don’t see those any more.’
Ne-Yo also revealed that Motown is on a mission to breathe life back into R&B:
Motown wants to breathe fresh air into R&B, but Motown was not always cutting edge, it was soulful but good pop music too. They were always at the top of the charts in the 60s, and today the lines are getting blurred again with R&B artists doing dance and pop acts doing R&B. I feel now it’s just about good music again. Motown needs to stand for quality music, period.
Good for Motown! And Ne-Yo is talking like Lady Gaga is in the ‘Where
Are They Now’ bin already. Granted, she’s not making as much noise as
she was when ‘Boomkack’ was her creative director, but she’s still doing
a little something. Unfortunately, a lot of her artistry was based on
gimmicks and costumes versus the
appreciation for her vocal ability so Ne-Yo may definitely be right when
it comes to her still being around 10-20 years from now.
