Rapper Wale is not here for Kelly Clarkson’s comment towards Miguel at the Grammys.
Although Miguel’s “Adorn” record was one of the biggest R&B songs on the radio last year, there are still a lot of people who don’t know who he is just yet, so his performance with Wiz Khalifa at the Grammys was a nice little introduction for a few folks that are out of the loop.
Season One American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, was definitely impressed and gave him a shout out while accepting her award for Best Pop Vocal album. She said,
“Miguel, I don’t know who the hell you are, but we need to sing together. I mean, good God. That was the sexiest damn thing I’ve ever seen.”Although some artists like Pink thought that Kelly’s comment was funny and cute, others, like Wale didn’t think it was funny at all. Wale, who worked with Miguel on “Lotus Flower Bomb,” told MTV after the show:
“I didn’t like the Kelly Clarkson back-handed comments to Miguel. I didn’t like that at all. I just feel like our urban music is belittled, a little bit. Not trying to offend nobody on the committee, but for a record as big as ‘Adorn,’ and it to not be presented as a real performance onstage; it was almost like a segue to an award. Again, I don’t want to offend anybody on the committee, but that wasn’t a very good representation of our music because ‘Adorn’ is gonna be around for the next 30 years.”Meanwhile, Miguel didn’t seem to take offense. He met up with her backstage and posed for a pic that she posted on her Instagram with the caption, “Miguel!”
Kelly’s little shout out probably put even more people on to Miguel but Wale is right about Miguel’s performance. It was extremely short.
