The
prospect of Matt Damon returning to The Bourne franchise is looking
really promising, especially if Bourne producer Frank Marshall has
things his way.
Marshall — who’s produced all four of the action movies which include The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and upcoming The Bourne Legacy
— told Empire that he would like to see Matt Damon team up with current
Bourne star, Jeremy Renner in the fifth installment of the franchise.
“You
see there are several different programs in the movie with different
skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one
we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”
But what would the return of Jason Bourne look like now that Jeremy Renner appears comfortable as the new lead in Bourne Legacy?
Renner plays Alex Cross, a former military man who, unlike Jason Borne,
made the choice to become a CIA assassin. The fact that Damon’s and
Renner’s characters are very different definitely makes a “Jason Borne
meets Alex Cross” scenario more encouraging. In addition, the fourth
installment reportedly takes place around the same time as Ultimatum, making it more of a ‘paraquel’ than a sequel.
On
the other hand, if Matt Damon — who was seen in a rare public feud with
Bourne mastermind Tony Gilroy back in December — isn’t interested then
Marshall, and presumably many Bourne fans, shouldn’t hold breath.
However, Damon did hint that he would be game for another run with the
franchise.
“I think if [Bourne Legacy] doesn’t work, we can just
ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen, and that’d be fine. But I expect
that it will work and only help us if we did another one, which I’d
love to do.”
The Bourne Legacy, which also stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Joan Allen and Oscar Isaac, hits U.S. theaters August 10th.
