Two men in Chicago have been taken into custody for stealing checks from President Obama's campaign headquarters. Jessie Adams and Willard Elam had their bail set Saturday (Sept. 22) for committing theft and fraud.
Adams' bail was set at $100,000 because he was seen as the ring-leader, while Elam's bail was set at $75,000. According to prosecutors in Cook County, Elam and an unidentified man posed as business owners working with the Obama campaign.
Adams and Elam allegedly stole two checks from the building housing
the president's Chicago headquarters, last week, and deposited them into
fraudulent accounts. The accounts were opened with falsified
documents on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13, at TCF Bank Locations inside two
grocery stores . The first check was valued at $24,857, while the second
was $23,839.
Someone wotking on Obama's re-election campaign caught wind of the
fraud after vendors complained about not being paid. Even though the
checks were made out to real companies, the accounts were phony.
Ben Finkenbinder, the Obama campaign's Midwest
secretary expressed happiness that the men had been caught."We're
pleased that they're [the police] dealing with issue swiftly, and don't
expect this to have any impact on the campaign.
While both men are in custody, the third assailant is still at large,
and is responsible for opening one of the two bank accounts.
Aside from breaking the law, Adams, 36, works for a general contracting company, and Elam, 48, holds a position as a laborer.
