Jay-Z Announces New Jersey Nets’ Move to Brooklyn

Rap mogul and partial owner of the New Jersey Nets, Jay-Z officially announced that in February the NBA team will be rebranding and unveiling their new logos and new city as the Brooklyn Nets. In a brief statement, Jay-Z talked about the teams transition today in Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue, across the street of what’s to become the team’s home court called the Barclay’s Center, which is set to open on September 28, 2012.
“We’ve decided that the final name would be the Brooklyn Nets,” said the rapper who grew up only minutes away at the Marcy Houses and later at 560 State Street.
“It’s already created so many jobs… there are lots of vendors,” added Jay Z speaking from the plaza at Atlantic Terminal overlooking the Center.
“I like that. You know what it is, it’s deep love. Biggie had a line ‘spread love, that’s the Brooklyn way.’ It’s a deep love we have for our heroes. We walk around with that,” said Jay.
How many rings does Jay expect from the new BK Nets?
“Maybe one, maybe two, maybe three – I sound like LeBron,” Jay-Z joked, referring to LeBron James’s infamous prediction of the number of championships the Miami Heat would win.
The Net’s top marketing executive Brett Yormark spoke on the change, saying:
“We think we’ve developed a lot of equity behind brand Nets.[...]Brooklyn was easy. Brooklyn is iconic. It transcends the marketplace. In many respects, it’s a global name and reference.”
Courtside seats for all 44 games are no joke; they’re already trying to bring in local businesses and big spenders to spend the $15,400 for all-access passes. Half of the luxury seats have already been sold and season tickets go on sale in March 2012. Jay will also reportedly kick-off the opening of the new arena next year with a string of concerts and special events starring himself and his wife Beyonce.
