J. Cole: ‘Some Big Artists On Twitter Are Fighting For Attention’

If it’s one thing that we all may can agree on, it’s that twitter and instagram has managed to start a whole new breed of attention-seeking celebrities. Since the social network has blown up, we’ve seen celebs tweet everything from them laying in bed with their significant others to tweeting from the toilet and even the first few moments of their babies’ breastfeeding. Nothing’s really sacred anymore and instead of living in the moment, every moment is snapped and shared with the world.
For this reason alone, J. Cole, who has over 2 million followers on twitter, is not about that ‘tweeting’ life. During an interview with Bootleg Kev of Las Vegas’ Hot 97.5, he recently explained that he has stopped tweeting because he feels as though a lot of his peers, even some big name artists that he respects, are starved for attention on the social network.
I’m not on Twitter no more, I’m not doing it and I’m not going to. I’m sitting and on watching all these artists who I respect — some of them are big artists — on Twitter fighting for attention. Every tweet is like, I’m looking for attention. Retweet me!
It comes from this place of fear, like I don’t want people to forget about me. But really your body of work speaks for you, so it’s doing work even when you’re not knowing it. But because people ain’t talking about you on Twitter, you’re not the trending topic or your mixtape ain’t trending, it’s like you feel a certain kind of way. [...] But when it’s my time, I’m gonna load up all my clips and I’m gonna empty ‘em out. But in the meantime, I’ m not going to worry about my name not being talked about, like no, I’m not going to play that game.
